Model making is becoming increasingly more popular and is heading back to its popularity of a couple of decades ago. With the current financial climate, people are looking for cheaper hobbies and pastimes to spend their spare money on. Back in the 1970s and 1980s plastic model making was incredibly popular with parents and children alike, but it suffered from the introduction of home computing and video gaming systems. Although these where a lot more expensive hobbies, many people chose to spend their expendable money on these new modern, pastimes and left the models on the shelves. Ironically, a few years earlier in the mid 1970s, radio controlled model making had raised its popularity at the expense of other traditional hobbies, but with the advent of the home computer, it was left in the wings again.
But fashion and popularity go around in circles and at present, the computers and gaming systems are moving aside, although very, very slightly to accommodate a new found passion of model kits and radio controlled vehicles. Although the hard-core modelers have always remained, younger children and teenagers are becoming more interested in hands-on model making instead of sitting in front of the TV for endless hours watching or playing video games.
Surely this can only be a good thing? With the younger generation learning about engineering and the mechanics of machines through model making, this has surely got to have a positive effect on their education and interest in these areas. Maybe if video gaming had not become as popular as it did in the 1980s onwards, our nation's manufacturing industries may be in better shape today?

Four Types Of Model Aircrafts You Can Build
Do you enjoy the beautiful model aircrafts that are sold in the toy shops and on so many sites online? Of course you can just go to a shop or click on a site and buy the ones you like most. But besides the fact that buying ready models costs you money it's just not as cool as building models yourself.
What kind of models could you build yourself? Almost all. Here are some ideas:
Paper airplanes. Who has not build one as a kid? Building paper airplane can be as simple as getting a sheet of paper and making few folds. But there are also flying paper aircrafts with an engine and remote control or others which are exact scale models of existing real aircrafts. Some enthusiasts build even paper helicopter which can fly.
The main disadvantage of the paper aircrafts is that they easily get damaged - especially the really flying ones.
Free flight aircrafts. There is a category of model airplanes called "free flight" which means they fly without any attachment to the ground or even to your hand. Most free flight models are simple - just like the simple paper airplanes that we build as kids (they are in fact free flight airplane models too). Free flight helicopters are much harder to build than the airplanes for obvious reasons, but there are people who build them - with self rotating propellers or "charged" by a rubber band mechanism.
The free flight airplanes are great enjoyment and fun. They are easy to get lost which is their main disadvantage.
RC Aircrafts. Remote control aircrafts are very cool toys but they really require technical knowledge about electronics and similar stuff. You will not save money by building such models yourself - the ready RC airplanes and helicopters are pretty cheap compared to the efforts to build yourself. But if you can build an RC aircraft by your own hands you will really have something to be proud of.
You may build RC aircraft much easier if you buy a kit or at least a package of remote control and engine.
Static Scale Models. Sounds simple? Actually this is the heavy artillery of the airplane modeling. Making scale models is hard exactly because you have to keep the scale of the real model. This require high preciseness and skills to work on very small parts.
The static model aircrafts can be made of wood, mahogany, plastic or even clay. If you are scarified to do everything from scratch you can buy almost ready static models which require only painting. This is a good way to start.
Most fans of the model aviation sooner or later want to build their own models in addition to the ones they buy and collect. You may decide to start by building yourself - there is nothing scary and it's a lot of fun.

Model Ships and Model Boats - A Fascinating Hobby
Starting a new model ships or model boats building or collecting hobby is an exciting and fascinating hobby for any age. Some ship models or boat models are made from kits ranging from very difficult for the skilled craftsmen to ones made easy for beginners or children. Some hobbyists carve their model ships or boat models from scratch while others build them from a kit. These kits are usually made from plastic or wood, depending on a person’s skill and/or budget restraints. A unique invention is the "small" ship models and boat models that are built in a folded down pattern and inserted into a bottle then erected by the pulling of a piece of thread to create a ship in a bottle. Price range for model ships or model boats, in the past varied substantially; from less than $100.00 to several thousand dollars. However, internet competition has forced prices down to an affordable level. Whether or not a model ship or boat is personally built or purchased, they both make great gifts for that hard-to-find dad, grandfather, relative, etc…
Even though an enthusiast can build their own ship or boat models, some prefer to purchase a finalized model product for either lack of time, skill, and/or patience or maybe just want to collect them. Some purchasers buy them for their home and office decor. Model replicas of model ships and model boats have always played a vital part in the building of "the real ship". Model ship building started as far back as 3200 B.C. in Egypt. Model builders hand carved models, from scratch; these model ships were the actual blueprints that early designers gave their workers to help them build the real-size ship to the scale desired by the designers as an end result. In a sense the old model builders built them from a completely different perspective; these models were built for the completion of the designer’s actual desired “real size” ship scale. However, today’s model builders build model ships to bring joy and enthusiasm to their lives; they built them to create an upscale model instead.
Ship models are built and used by designers mainly help ship select the final form of the ship's hull before they draw out the actual plans. Modern computer programs are also used to assist in plan development, just like today's computerized blueprints to build a house. These model ships are then tested in tanks to provide precise information on how the hull of the full sized ship will perform at sea and how it will perform at various speeds and various ocean behaviors. All of your major ship builders use this method before they decide on the final design.
Keep in mind that if you are interested in becoming a model ship or model boat builder or a collector, you need to just have fun with your new hobby. If you’re a beginner, have patience for it may take some time to become that “expert” in the field. I do promise that your new hobby will be a wonderfully rewarding experience, so just enjoy it!
